Open lectures are changing!
◆ Apply to attend through the dedicated Gunma University open lecture site.
◆ Because the lectures are made available online, certificates of completion will not be issued.
◆ Students may attend all open lectures free of charge.

● Study sign language and deaf culture in an online class
This class is team-taught by hearing and deaf instructors. Students will learn the basics of Japanese Sign Language grammar and usage while having fun watching skits which begin with the encounter between Kanamori, who has been studying sign language on his own, and Shimoyama, who is deaf. Lectures on deaf culture will address the essential question of why different languages lead to different cultures. Anyone with an interest in sign language is very welcome!
〇 Lecture fee: 7,200 yen
〇 Capacity: 100 students (first come first served)

*Lectures will remain available online for one week after each class.

This e-learning course provides recorded video of the Study sign language and deaf culture online class as on-demand materials.

● Study the grammar of Japanese Sign Language
Chances for serious study of the grammar of Japanese Sign Language don’t come along every day. In this e-learning course, students will watch simple videos explaining the basic grammar of Japanese Sign Language, followed by practice grammar problems. These lectures are recommended to prospective sign language interpreters, current interpreters who are interested in enhancing their JSL interpreting skills, teachers of sign language, and those involved in education and support for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

〇 Lecture fee: 8,200 yen
● Study deaf education via on-demand lectures
This class includes three courses: Understanding the basics of hearing impairments, Curriculum and instruction methods for the deaf, and Education and support for deaf children and adults with multiple disabilities. Each course is composed of three lectures. The class is recommended for special education teachers, students majoring in special education, social workers, staff at social work facilities, etc.* Each lecture includes assignments based on the learning content.
*Curriculum and instruction methods for the deaf mainly targets those involved with special education.
